The two baby gorillas were born into the Nshongi and Muyambi Gorilla Groups, two distinct gorilla families in the park. It is expected that the infants were born on April 25, 2020, and May 1, 2020, respectively. For park officials and environmentalists, this was a double-edged sword and a boon to the gorilla tourism sector.

The youngster of the Nshongi gorilla troop was born to Mother Kabagyenyi and Silverback Bweza.

The two are taking great care to protect their infant.

In the Rushaga area of Bwindi, the Nshongi Gorilla troop was the first to become acclimated and make themselves available for gorilla trekking safaris.

At least 35 people were a part of the group at the time of habituation, and they continued to splinter off to establish additional groups.

With the addition of the newborn, the group now consists of ten people.

The new infant of the Nshongi family was born to Mother Kabagyenyi, who joined this family from a wild group. She was a subadult by then. She eventually began mating with Silverback Bweza, the leader of the family, and now has a child. This was Mother Kabagyenyi’s first birth, and she is said to be roughly ten years old.

Silverback Muyambi is the leader of this family. He was a member of the Mubare family, the park’s first habituated group when it opened to tourists in 1993, but he broke away to start his own family, which bears his name.

Officials from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) claim that the two gorilla groups’ strict security measures have prevented them from getting near to the infants and determining their genders.

Additionally, they said that,

The effectiveness of Uganda’s conservation efforts is shown by the birth of the baby mountain gorillas.

Uganda’s animal populations have generally increased as a result of improved protected area integrity.

According to estimates from the just finished mountain gorilla census, there were 459 mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

With 604 people living in the Virunga massif at the time, there were 1,063 mountain gorillas overall. The fact that this is the greatest number of mountain gorillas ever recorded is encouraging for conservation efforts.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda are all part of the Virunga mountain range. In each of the three nations, the mountain gorillas reside in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Virunga National Park, and Volcanoes National Park.

The Bwindi forest is the only area with the largest number of mountain gorillas since the 604 gorillas in the Virunga range are shared.

The overall number of mountain gorillas in Bwindi has undoubtedly topped 460 due to the many births that have occurred since the previous census. Fifty percent of the world’s mountain gorillas are still found in Uganda.

There are a lot of kids in the Bwindi forest, so now is a great time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda. The tourist business was most severely impacted by the worldwide epidemic of the new coronavirus, which had far-reaching consequences that distorted Uganda safaris, including gorilla trekking. All gorilla tourist parks are now closed, but they will reopen shortly so that visitors may enjoy seeing these magnificent primates.

Don’t pass on a Rwandan gorilla tour, Congo gorilla trekking safari, or even a Uganda gorilla trekking safari when the time comes. Kabira Safaris would be happy to assist with any reservations.
