The Chimpanzee Sanctuary on Ngamba Island
Ngambo Island Starting in 1997, Ngamba Island is a project of the chimpanzees Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust “CSWCT,” which houses more than 40 orphaned chimpanzees to live out their lives since a return to their natural habitat is not feasible, while educating visitors and local communities about their amazing species and the need of conserving their delicate forest habitat.
About 100 acres, 98 of Ngamba Island are forested and separated from the visitor’s area by an electric fence allowing the chimps to wander during the day.
Note: Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary provides half- or full-day excursions including chimpanzee sightings.
You will see either a morning or afternoon feeding of the chimpanzees from the visitor’s platform area on the edge of the sanctuary fence, hear an educational lecture by sanctuary staff, have lunch with a great possibility of seeing a nearby fishing village, bird watching among other wildlife encounter.
Meeting point: Banga Beach in Entebbe offers safe parking with a covered waiting area before jetty departure. For lake circumstances, journey timings depend on the weather; speedboat estimates 60 minutes, while conventional motorized boats estimate 90 – 120 minutes each way.

Afternoon viewing runs from 10:30 to 5:00 p.m. Each way, journey time is about 90 to 120 minutes; weather determines this.
Along with all the basics needed on a boat, visitors are given life jackets and rain suites. Note: All the rates above are only validated after reserve are verified; they are simply guidelines and subject to change.

This amazing program allows guests to spend a day in the life of a chimpanzee caregiver by acting as caregivers themselves! Being one of the chimp caregivers will thrill you about the experience of seeing the chimps eat; but, you will also be involved in cooking and feeding them. You can help the staff with any activity taking place at the sanctuary that day—medical visits, research and monitoring, chimps’ holding area preparation, administrative labor, or any other use for your qualifications.
More importantly, this initiative seeks to raise money for our orphaned cousins’ well-being and assist our guests grasp and value what it takes to look after Ngamba Island’s orphanage. The team will work with you to demonstrate just what it entails in caring for these unique monkey species, their individual nature, and what makes them so precious.
Although “direct contact” is not permitted but rather allowed under strict observation of a resident Caregiver, as a caregiver you get to meet and engage with every chimps on the island. Excursion has several pre-approvals from CSWCT.
