Nshongi Gorilla Safari
The biggest gorilla group in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest at the moment is the Nshongi Group.
Located in the Southern Bwindi’s Rushaga area
As of right now, the largest habituated (or known to humans) gorilla group is the Nshongi Gorilla Group. It used to have 35 members, but now there are only 25 after a family dispute caused 10 members to depart under Mishaya’s leadership. It is located in the southwest section of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, in the Rushaga area. The Nshongi River, which runs through the region, inspired the group’s name.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) honored the creation of this family, and a number of celebrities attended. In fact, the gorillas became the faces of the “Friend a Gorilla” campaign, which was launched at the same time.
With a few occasional fight-related injuries, this group is mostly healthy.
