Discover Mwea Game Reserve; “An undiscovered oasis of tranquilly”. About 200 miles from Nairobi, the Mbeere District in Eastern Province has the Mwea National Reserve. Small hills dotted with bushed flora and scattered big trees make up the savannah habitat. Other parts are broad meadows along the major rivers; heavy undergrowth of big trees is seen here.
The dominant trees in the environment are the many Acacia species and baobab trees. The primary highlights of the environment are the meeting place of rivers Tana and Thiba, Kamburu and Masinga hydro-electric dams, which support a range of wildlife.
Elephants, Rothschild giraffes, Common zebras, Lesser kudu, Buffalo, Water Buck, Bush buck, Impala, Vervet Monkeys, Aardvark, Yellow baboons, Grants gazelle, Dik dik, Cape hare, Warthog, Black backed jackal, Duiker, Sykes monkey, Genet cat, Slender mongoose, Dwarf mongoose, Crested porcupine, Rivers and the dams also include hippos and crocodiles. The reserve has seen the documentation of many avian and reptile species.

Elephant, giraffe, lesser kudu, Burchell’s zebra, leopard, grey duiker, serval cat, Nile crocodile, waterbuck, hippo, spotted hyena, buffalo, black-backed jackal, sykes monkey, bushbuck, bush pig, olive baboon, warthog, rock hyrax,, impala and hartebeest are some of the animals seen in Mwea National reserve. Among the few threatened species found in the park are Genet cat, Stripped ground squirrel, Black backed jackal, and yellow baboon.

Mwea National Reserve has around 150 species of unique birds, including the white-backed night heron, Pel’s fishing owl, and severely endangered Hinde’s babbler. Many hydroelectric power dams, including Kamburu, Kiambere, Masinga, Gitaru, and Kindaruma-much of Kenya’s energy is generated from these dams.
On Tana River, the park has other sights like Adamson Falls, Mutonga Grand Falls, Usueni, and Kora. Masinga Resort conducts boat trips on Masinga and Kamburu dams.
Getting to the Mwea game reserve
From Nairobi via Thika-Matuu-Masinga Dam, Mwea National Reserve is 160km distant over Mwea Masinga Dam Bridge and a dusty road to Makima Gate. Other paths to the Park include Nairobi-Thika-Garissa, Nairobi-Embu-Thika and several more that link via Embu.
By plane, the area is accessed via Masinga airstrip next to Masinga lodge 14km from Mwea main gate. Using Railway, the reserve is 13kms from Nairobi on Saturdays and the return trip is on Sunday. The drop off is in Nanyuki, where you rent or take public means of transportation to the reserve.
Where should one stay to tour Mwea wildlife Reserve?
Although the reserve itself does not have lodges or campers, Masinga lodge situated next to Masinga dam has basic amenities. There are self-catering camps in Mbogo, Silvester, Mavuria, kyangosi, hippo Point, Kanyonga and Githechu.
