Different types of gorillas
several kinds of gorillas. Large wild primates that belong to the ape family, gorillas are indigenous to Africa’s jungles. These apes share 98% of their DNA with humans.
These come in two varieties: the eastern and western gorillas, which are the most common and widely distributed in the tropical rain forests of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, covering an area of roughly 4,600 square miles.
There are two populations of them: one in the Central African Virunga Mountains, and another in Uganda’s Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
The mountain gorillas and the eastern lowland gorillas are the two subspecies of the eastern gorillas. There are two species of western gorillas: the cross-river gorilla, which is closely related to the lowland western gorillas that inhabit the Congo River region.
Its head and teeth are different in shape, making it the smallest gorilla. The most common species of gorilla is the western gorilla. This kind of ape has a yellowish forehead and can be either gray or brown.
Their brighter coloring and a point on their snout set them apart from eastern gorillas. They reside in groups of two to twenty families, consisting of males, females, and young. The average height of the males and females is 155 cm and 135 cm, respectively.
Stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and other fiber-rich foods are what they eat. The Ebola virus in their population region is the current threat. Poaching, habitat destruction, and civil violence in nations where apes live are further dangers.
The lowland marshes in the central African montane forests are home to western lowland gorillas. Central Africa, Angola, Gabon, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Gabon are all home to this species of gorilla. The western lowland gorilla is the largest and strongest mammal on land, while being the smallest species. Its body is covered in hair, and it lacks a tail. Its skin is jet black. The group is led by a dominant silverback and covers an area of 3 to 18 square miles.
Northern and western Africa are home to the greatest number of cross-river gorillas. It can be found in the hills and mountains close to the sources of the Cross River on the Nigerian-Cameroonian border.
There are just 250 of this species of great ape in the world. Its hands and feet are smaller, while its palate, cranial vault, and skull are the smallest.
The largest species of gorilla, the eastern gorilla, lives in the mountain rain forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda. and the eastern DRC’s woods of the Albertine Rift.It is enormous, with long forelimbs, a large head, and a broad chest.
The hands, feet, breasts, and face of these primates are black. This species’ males weigh 140 kg, while the females weigh about 90 kg.
They are reliant on a diet. A silverback serves as the head of the family.
The eastern lowland gorillas are found in the hilly regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, namely in the national parks of Maiko, Usala, Itombwe, and Kahuzi Biega.
It is large and has a jet-black coat similar to a mountain gorilla’s. On the other hand, their head and body hair are shorter.
The Virungas in central Africa and the Bwindi impenetrable national park in Uganda are home to mountain gorillas. There are just 880 mountain gorillas remaining in the world, and they are smaller and lighter, weighing between 140 and 205 kg.
These species are all classified as critically endangered.
