Sanctuary for Chimpanzees on Mabamba Island

Founded by Jane Goodall in 1998, Mabamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home to orphaned chimpanzees; around 45 rescued chimpanzees call this island a haven. Other choices for visits to and experiences on the Island include packed lunches, upon request.

One of the best spots in Uganda to see the most sought-after shoebill in its natural habitat is Mabamba Swamp. Travel brochures often show them attracting the unusual birds with their pre-historic characteristics and huge yellow bill. A canoe voyage allows you to bird this area by “all navigating rivers forming lily pads and papyrus swamp.” Among the notable bird species to be seen are blue swallow, Pallid harcher, and Papyrus yellow warbler.
