Full List of Silverbacks in Bwindi
Complete List of Silverbacks in Bwindi: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of Uganda’s major national parks, is a low-montane rainforest in the southwest of the country. It is home to gorillas. The four regions/sectors of Bwindi Forest National Park are Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija, and Nkuringo. The mountain gorillas live in each of these gorilla trekking sectors, and groups of eight people can visit each habituated gorilla family.
One silverback, who is in charge of leadership power, is always there to guard and guide a family and its members. The silverbacks who are in charge of guarding and directing the family are listed below.
Rushegura-Mwirima Family
One silverback, Mwirima, who is the brother of the former silverback, Rwansiganzi, leads the 19-member Rushegura family in the Buhoma region.
Mwirima, a late-20s man, is the brother of Rwansigazi, a former Habinyanja silverback.
The Habinyanja-Mugurisi Family
The Habinyanja family was led by Mungurisi, a silverback whose name, according to Bakiga, means “old man.” The dominant silverback, Makara, took over as leader after Rwansigazi relinquished his position of authority.
The Mubare-Ruhondeza Family
Alpha the Silverback, Kanyonyi, is the heir to the Mubare family in Buhoma Sector, which was commanded by Ruhondenza, who died of old age.
The Bitukura-Ndahura Family
There are silverbacks in the Ruhija region. The Bitukura Gorilla family is headed by Ndahura, who succeeded Karumazi, the silverback, who was too old to rule. Ndahura is in charge of providing happiness for the family.
The Oruzongo family, Tebirikwata
The 25-member Oruzongo Gorilla family is headed by Tebirikwata, one of the eldest gorillas. He is vivacious and has a fun personality.
Rukina-Kyaguriro and Zeus
Although Rukina exiled Zeus to the forest, where he eventually perished, Zeus and Rukina are the only known silverbacks in the Kyaguriro family.
The Kyaguriro family is currently headed by a silverback named Rukara, who has authority over 15 family members. Rukina later died of old age.
The Nkuringo Family’s Rafiki and Safari
Several silverbacks have taken the lead for generations in the Nkuringo Gorilla family, including Silverback Alpha, who was named after the word “Nkuringo.” He died in 2004, but he had raised his two sons, Rafiki (which means “friend” in Kiswahili) and Safari, who assumed leadership and are now responsible for overseeing 19 family members.
Mishaya: The Family Mishaya
Mwine the silverback is currently the leader of the Mishaya gorilla family, which was formerly led by the silverback known as Mishaya when it became accustomed to trekking.
The Family of Nshongi
The habituation family of “Nshongi” is located in the same sector. It is headed by a silverback named Nshogi and consists of 26 members.
Family Gwigi & Busingye-Kahungye
The silverback In the Kahungye family, one of the families in the Rushaga sector, Gwigi and Busingye are the silverbacks. They have held sway over a group of 27 members.
