Hirwa Gorilla Group
The Hirwa gorilla group is one of the mountain gorilla families that inhabit the Virunga Conservation Area. They are a troop with particularly distinctive behaviors that set them apart from other groups. You can be sure that you will enjoy this group at all costs because it is one of the most popular among trekkers and the most hiked as well.
The Kinyarwanda term “hirwa” means “lucky one.” Because of their luck, which has shown up so frequently, this particular group was given this name. The birth of twins in 2011 was one of the significant events that demonstrated their good fortune. One of the fortunate groups to have been blessed with twins is the Hirwa gorilla tribe.
This group was established in 2006 with 13 Agashya and a few Sabyinyo gorillas. Later, additional individuals apparently joined, bringing the total to 16, including one dominant Silverback. Since he enjoys expanding his family, the silverback is constantly looking for new members, and fortunately, more people have been persuaded to join the group as well.
In addition, the silverback is incredibly powerful, assertive, and committed to defending every member of the gorilla family.
It appears that the Hirwa Gorilla family lives in the foothills of Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo, two Virunga volcanoes.
Depending on the trekkers’ abilities, the trekking skill level might be rather challenging. Trekking the steep slopes of Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo is extremely difficult, but ultimately rewarding, especially given the location of this specific gorilla family.
Trekking to this habituated mountain gorilla family to witness their daily activities—such as playing, grooming one another, moving, feeding, and expressing their gestures—should be done with extreme physical preparation.
