Kahungye Gorilla Family

One of the ten habituated mountain gorilla groups protected by Bwindi’s impenetrable forests is the Kahungye Gorilla Family, which is located in the Rushaga section of the park.

In a nutshell, one of the forests in the southwest region of Uganda is the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It appears that the forest is divided into four areas: Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga, and Ruhija. Each of these areas is home to a distinct troop of mountain gorillas.

The Rushaga sector, which is also the only one where Uganda Gorilla habituation experiences occur, is one of the most fascinating areas to follow mountain gorillas.

Even after a split a few years ago, which gave rise to a new mountain gorilla family known as the Busingye Gorilla group, the Kahungye Gorilla group still has a substantial population.

The family was initially sighted on a hill in Rushaga, hence the name Kahungye. There are presently 13 members, including three Silverbacks. This is a rough estimate, though, and it is subject to change based on a variety of events, such as gorilla deaths, new members joining the group, members departing for other groups, or more specifically, new members joining the group.Kahungye Gorilla Family

After successfully acclimating, this group was allowed for gorilla trekking in 2011. Regretfully, they broke up after a year to form the new Busingye Gorilla Group. The family had three Silverbacks and 27 members prior to the miscommunications and separation story.

“Gwigi” the silverback is currently in charge of the group. In Rukiga, one of the indigenous languages of Uganda, the name Gwigi means “door.”

You can have an exciting gorilla trekking experience and observe the mountain gorilla family as they go about their daily lives for no more than an hour.
