Kwitonda Gorilla Group
One of the mountain gorilla groups that inhabit Volcanoes National Park is the Kwitonda Gorilla Group Family. This group moved to Volcanoes National Park after fleeing the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Virunga National Park, and they have never indicated any intention of going back to their original location.
The Kinyarwanda word that means “Humble One” is the source of the word Kwitonda. Kwitonda explains the Silverback’s and the entire family’s personalities. This Silverback had a very modest disposition and rarely got into battles unless it was absolutely necessary. It is also asserted that one of the reasons they left the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park to live in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park was to seek peace.
Regretfully, Kwitonda passed away in September 2012. Before he was discovered laying dead, he had been absent from the group for a while. Akarevuro, a silverback, is now in charge of the group.
There were 18 people in this group at the beginning, including a Silverback named Kwitonda, who was given the group’s name. Later on, nevertheless, the Kwitonda Gorilla Group family was able to expand its membership to 25 individuals, including 4 Silverbacks.
Migration is well-known in the history of the Kwitonda Gorilla Group family. It currently roams the lower slopes of Mount Muhabura and Mount Karisimbi. This Kwitonda Gorilla Group is one of the most difficult to trek because of the hills and the fact that it continues to move far into dense forest areas that are difficult for trekkers to reach.
