Sabyinyo Gorilla Group
Along with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda is home to the Sabyinyo Gorilla Group, one of the three nations in the world where wild apes can be found.
One of the largest apes in the monkey family, mountain gorillas are an endangered species. 98% of human DNA is shared with mountain gorillas.
The rainforests of Volcanoes National Park, which is situated in northwest Rwanda and is approximately two hours from Kigali International Airport, are home to these endangered animals.
The Virunga region, which includes the three Virunga volcanoes Karisimbi, Mikeno, and Bisoke, is home to Volcanoes National Park.
The mild foothills of Mount Gahinga and Sabyinyo are home to mountain gorillas. The Sabinyo gorilla group derives its name from a native term that means “old man’s teeth” and was named after the Sabinyo volcano.
When some females, including Ijisho, Ryango, and Gukunda, were removed from another gorilla family in 1992, the silverback, who served as the group’s leader, led the group’s formation.
Only four women and two leaders, known as the “Silverbacks,” made comprised the new gang. The group was formerly known as Amayubi, a local term meaning “wasps,” until being renamed the Sabyinyo Gorilla Group.
Located at the edge of Volcanoes National Park, this Sabinyo clan is one of the closest families there.
Guhondo is the leader of the group and the largest silverback ever measured, weighing about 220 kg. It takes just two hours to reach and trek the family.
Compared to other groups, this one has fewer family members. It is a remarkable family with 13 members, including two Silverbacks, the largest of which is found in Volcanoes National Park.
One can spend an hour in the bush with this amusing family while they play and go about their daily activities.
Despite having fewer members, the group is always changing due to birth, death, and migration rates. As long as new members and existing ones continue to live happily in the group, new members join.
To enjoy an interesting experience with this gorilla troop, which has a solid track record during peak seasons, reserve a gorilla permit in advance. The voyage to this family is limited to eight persons.
You will get the opportunity to look into the eyes of huge silverbacks during your meeting with the Sabyinyo gorilla group. These animals will also look at you with intelligence and mindfulness.
