Location of Nyungwe National Park; the map of East Africa safaris shows it in the southwest of Rwanda. Situated in the South East of Lake Kivu, the park lies on the Albertine Rift.

One can also follow Nyungwe National Park by means of the neighboring Rwandan provinces. Its surrounds consist of five districts:

South west of Nyungwe, the Rusizi district is well-known among others for its ideal view of the mountainous area bordering Democratic Republic of Congo from the Lake Kivu shore. The area is well-known for its beautiful water springs. More to that, Bugarara locality marks the lowest altitude point in Rwanda. About 900 meters above sea level, the Bugarara location is a plain area in the West of Rwanda.

From Rusizi border, it covers 53kilometer trip and 34 kilometers from Kamembe town to Gisakura welcome center. It also addresses a 49-kilometer journey from Kamembe to Uwinka receiving facility.

Once known as the holy country, Nyuruguru district southeast of Nyungwe is among the top pilgrimage locations in Rwanda. Nonetheless, Catholic churches go here from all over the globe, countries, and regions every year. From Nyaruguru district to the well-known Nyungwe reception centers Uwinka in the center of the park, beginning point “Nyaruguru” spans an 87 kilometers drive to get Kitabi receptions center.

District of Nyamagabe: East of Nyungwe

Driving to Nyungwe National Park, the Nyamagabe district is the second after Huye “Butare”. High mountains define it, and there are lots of tea farms there, particularly in the Kitabi area. Around this route, expect to find plenty of baboons. More importantly, although it takes 56 kilometers from Nyamagabe town to Uwinka reception center, it takes 21 kilometers from Nyamagabe town to nearest Nyungwe’s reception center on the entry of the park when you are driving from Kigali.

This high alpine sector of Rwanda is among the ideal tourist areas. Along here provides the great perspective of Kivu Lake and its islands. Seeing this scenery never gets old, and honeymooners are recommended to visit there.

Coffee is well-known in this area; so, you could choose to arrange coffee excursions when you visit there. Also discovered here is the first chic tea plantation, Gisovu Tea Estate. From Karongi district to Gisakura reception center, it involves 91 kilometers drive; from Karongi district to Uwinka reception center, it covers 109 kilometers.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is situated in the West of Nyumasheke district.

Cold climate and a resort district define the Nyumasheke district, which presents a pleasing view of the Lake Kivu and the green tea plantation land. From Nyumasheke district to Gis Sakura receiving facility, the nearest to Nyamasheke, it just requires a 41 kilometer trip; from Nyamasheke district to Uwinka reception center, the distance is similarly 59 km. From Kigali, 216 km drives; from the Rubavu area, 219 kilometers.

Rising on one of the Congo Nile divide mountains, Nyungwe Forest National Park is a high tropical highland forest. More precisely, the park is roughly 1600 to 2950 meters above sea level. Mount Bigugu has the highest point with an altitude climate with almost 2000 mm of yearly heavy rain and always moderate temperatures.

Finally, what distinguishes Nyungwe Forest National Park from other parks in East Africa alongside those in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania – beautiful scenery, the canopy walk, chimpanzee tracking, being home with the highest concentration of primates especially the chimpanzees and also among the oldest rainforest in Africa.
